about

The Fighter is based on a poem by Ron Coleman that expresses his frustration with his dementia diagnosis. It is performed by Ron himself with support from his family. The song combines electro and glam rock with a charismatic vocal suggestive of The Fall’s Mark E Smith.

lyrics

“I am the demented poet. Hear my call”

Disgracefully dementing,
frustration fermenting,
Vocally venting,
desperate denial.

Developing daily,
malevolent malady.
Furious fidgeting,
Terrifying twitching.

Dementia diagnosis,
painful prognosis,
Broken, begotten,
futures forgotten.

Haunting hallucinations,
perverse persecutions.
Rightly refusing
maniacal musings.

Cognitive chaos,
illuminating illusion,
Wordless wanderings,
constant confusion.

Corrupted connections,
invasive insurrections,
Deadly directives,
interventions ineffective.

People pretending,
niceness never ending,
Totally transcending,
cognitive comprehension.
