Oh what a lovely day this is! We had one like this – but where? Away abroad with Jane - and thing - Our son with hair so fair. We must have been in Cyprus Or maybe in Capri. That boy, the keenest cyclist, And he was only three! He had a sort of nickname I don't remember what. It's years ago and far away, But important it is not. And it's much the same with Jane Who cares for me so very well. My mind can be a pain. I only know the sun did shine That day so far away. And very regal stuff it does, Remembering that again.

“I am the demented poet. Hear my call” Disgracefully dementing, frustration fermenting, Vocally venting, desperate denial. Developing daily, malevolent malady. Furious fidgeting, Terrifying twitching. Dementia diagnosis, painful prognosis, Broken, begotten, futures forgotten. Haunting hallucinations, perverse persecutions. Rightly refusing maniacal musings. Cognitive chaos, illuminating illusion, Wordless wanderings, constant confusion. Corrupted connections, invasive insurrections, Deadly directives, interventions ineffective. People pretending, niceness never ending, Totally transcending, cognitive comprehension.

When the grey mist descends It’s not easy to comprehend My head’s in a vice like grip Slowly squeezing, applying pressure Numbing my senses and feelings Makes me want to close my eyes And blank out the world around me The only ones who truly understand Are those who dance to the same tune Can you feel all my frustrations inside As I hold back the flood of emotions And look to find peace and salvation From these demons that hold me down Breaking up my thoughts into a thousand Mixed up pieces, just like a jigsaw puzzle That has lost the cover to its box which explains Why I can no longer see the whole picture Left in silence as language slowly leaves me And our moments in space and time slowly slip away If I break down will you comfort me Help me to remember things differently To live for those moments and memories That I can no longer put into words Help me to embrace these feelings As this disease erases all my emotions That makes us feel so human

Cry loud from the wild From first breath drawn Till last breath's rattle Cry loud from the wild. Cry loud in the dawn From the sun's gentle embrace, That quickens the spirits’ travels Cry loud in the dawn. Cry loud to the dark As the spirit finds its rest It will wait to be reborn. Cry loud to the dark. Cry loud from the wild Begin the fire of life That will end once more in death. Cry loud from the wild . Cry wild, cry wild, cry wild.

about

“Now old friends they're acting strange.
They shake their heads, they tell me that I've changed.
Something’s lost and something’s gained
in living every day.” – Joni Mitchell

Born to be Alive brings together songs from three dementia music projects developed between 2021 and 2023. In each one, people living with dementia were supported by songwriter Andrew Eaton Lewis to create original songs about their experiences, shaped by the music that’s most important to them.

Feelings, Going for a Walk, The Fighter and Farewell to the Demented Poet were created for a 2021 EP, The Demented Poets, funded by Deepness Dementia Media.

Suitcase of Songs, Who’s Ken and Both Sides Now were recorded for a 2022 project commissioned by An Lanntair and funded by Culture Collective.

Rigid System was written for Dementia: the Musical, a play about dementia activism by Ron Coleman.

All are original songs apart from Both Sides Now, an old favourite of Culture Collective project participant Alan Farquharson that took on a new resonance following his dementia diagnosis.

These songs have three purposes: to empower people living with dementia to tell their own stories in their own way, to keep memories alive, both for the writers and their loved ones, and to challenge perceptions of what dementia music projects should sound like.
