about

Going for a walk is based on a poem that John Hole wrote about his life, and memory loss, not long before he died early in 2021. In dialogue with his family, we have created an affectionate tribute to a man’s rich and remarkable life, celebrating his love of music and musical theatre, and drawing on key musical memories from his life (in particular the Beatles, Elton John, and musicals such as Tommy).

You can read an obituary of John written by Ginny Quiney at www.theguardian.com/stage/2021/mar/28/john-hole-obituary

lyrics

Oh what a lovely day this is!
We had one like this – but where?
Away abroad with Jane - and thing -
Our son with hair so fair.
We must have been in Cyprus
Or maybe in Capri.
That boy, the keenest cyclist,
And he was only three!
He had a sort of nickname
I don't remember what.
It's years ago and far away,
But important it is not.
And it's much the same with Jane
Who cares for me so very well.
My mind can be a pain.
I only know the sun did shine
That day so far away.
And very regal stuff it does,
Remembering that again.
